The newest movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise releases today and I was able to to an early screening of the movie with my mom. I hadn’t seen the one before this, so I wasn’t sure I’d be able to follow along. I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to follow the storyline even though I hadn’t seen the previous one. This movie takes place a few years after the previous movie and there’s a lot of context and back story given, which I really enjoyed.
I loved how it introduced new characters to us as well as kept some older ones who returned for this movie. I really enjoy that in sequel films, so it was nice that they kept that theme going. This movie has a lot of suspense, pirates attacking each other in the name of treasure and revenge. There was some really great fight scenes and scenes that required a lot of technical camera skill that added to the enjoyment of the film.
This movie was a lot darker to me than others movies in this franchise. It has a lot of “ghost” references, “spirit” references and quite a bit of discussion about witches. I will say that I found it to be heavy on the adult humor and sexual innuendos I wouldn’t recommend anyone under the age of ten seeing this movie. And viewing it with parent supervision for kids over that age.
Without giving too much away because if you’re a fan of this franchise of movies, you should see this one. There’s resolve at the end of the movie and even heart warming sacrifice that really ties the movie together at the end.
