Have you been to to Tokyo Joe’s for sushi and poke bowls? Yes, you can get great sushi for a great price and even amazing poke without traveling to Hawaii!
I was in Hawaii a few weeks ago and everyone insisted that we have to try poke. We were so busy doing touristy stuff that we never sought out this island delicacy. When I had a chance to try some out right here in Phoenix, I new that it was meant to be.
Phoenix Mom Blog contributor, Autumn and I met at the new Avondale location. It’s conveniently located at McDowell and 103rd avenue on the south side of the street. There hours are 10:45am – 9pm so you can get your sushi or poke fix almost anytime of day.
Don’t be overwhelmed when you walk in and view the menu. Especially, if this is your first time. Autumn and I were both first timers so we asked our cashier what was good and he gave some great recommendations. We knew we both wanted to try a sushi roll and a poke bowl.
The two rolls that we ordered had so much flavor. We decided on the Crab Cheese Wonton Roll (100% real crab, wonton strips, cream cheese, avocado, sweet chili sauce and panic crumbs) and the Texas Roll (grilled steak, shrimp, red onion, cilantro, avocado, cucumber and green dragon sauce.
If you are a newbie to sushi I would recommend the Crab Cheese Wonton Roll. It was nice and light and the flavors mixed nicely. The Texas Roll is great for those that like things a little bit on the spicy side!
Now let’s get to the poke bowls. I went with the Hawaiian theme since I had just returned from the islands and obviously was yearning to return! First you choose either salmon or ahi tuna, whether you would like white rice, brown rice or chopped greens, a dressing and toppings.
My bowl was the ahi tuna, brown rice, traditional Hawaiian dressing, topped with avocado, mango, pineapple, macadamia nuts and green onion.
Autumn chose ahi tuna, brown rice. spicy aioli, cucumber, avocado crispy onions, sesame seeds and green onions. Now, we both chose quite a few toppings but they all paired so nicely together. And if you’re worried about a fishy taste, this is sushi grade tuna and has a very mild flavor with just a bit of saltiness.
Tokyo Joe’s has locations all over the valley, so please stop in and see them. They will take great care of you and serve you a memorable meal!
