I know we hate to admit it but it’s time to start thinking about that back to school to do list! I was mentally going over my list the other day and one thing that many of us overlook is vaccinations. This is not a fun topic in my house. I’m sure it’s the same way for most. I’ve never heard of a child that likes to get shots! After looking over my boys’ vaccination cards, I realized they are all caught up for now.
I remember many times when bribery came into play when we were on our way for shots. Stickers worked when they were pretty young but eventually we had to move up to candy and even money. A few years ago we had insurance that did not cover immunizations. Those shots can be expensive! Thankfully I found a county clinic where my boys could receive free immunizations. Now, we have much better insurance that covers the cost but what about those in developing countries that never receive vaccinations because the expense is just too great?
Well, Walgreens has teamed up with the UN Foundations Shot@Life campaign. Every vaccine that is administered in a Walgreens Health Care clinic, another shot will be donated to a child in a developing country. This may not seem like much to us, but these can be life saving vaccines for these children!
I’ve visited many developing countries, most recently Dominican Republic. The country was very beautiful and the people were so loving. I had the chance to spend some time at a school in a rural village and learned that in their country schooling is not free. In the US our tax dollars take care of public education. That is something that I think we take for granted. Many of those children in the Dominican wouldn’t be able to attend even if their family could afford their education because they are ill from very preventable diseases.
Be sure to visit your local Walgreens Healthcare Clinic if your children need back to school vaccines. I’ve used the services at the Healthcare Clinic in the past and the wait time is very minimal. They accept many insurance’s and you don’t have to waste time at a doctors office. I know that time can be very valuable! You can go to the Walgreens website to find your nearest location so you can be a part of the #GiveaShot campaign.
